Is this project still being actively developed / supported? I really like the look of the framework and the methodologies it uses however the community doesn't seem active and I'd be concerned about sinking a lot of time into learning something with little community?

Yes! This is still being developed on. We are currently in a transition to a new backend so you can create your HaxePunk games on more platforms thanks to a far more powerful and flexible backend.
